Great leaders are continually on the path of discovery. Professional Foundations is a guide for the professional development process, beginning with you and mapping out your best professional journey.  Join us to discover and apply the skills it takes to be an exceptional contributor and leader.

Course content focuses on key behaviors that positively impact results. This is wrapped into an 8-week in-class study, with top classroom leadership, and a collaborative learning environment.

    1. Introduction to Professional Foundations
    October 15, 2019

    In this opening session, participants will learn various work and leadership styles, how these styles may influence the way we lead others, and the value of understanding and embracing a variety of styles.

    2. Leading Individuals & Teams
October 22, 2019

    Learn best practices for partnering with individuals and groups, delegating work, communicating expectations, and managing performance.

    3. Building Trust & Delegating Responsibility
    October 29, 2019

    The focus in this session will be on trust as a foundation for our professional endeavors, and how we can build on that trust to appropriately manage our own and others’ work. Different levels of delegation, and how to decide when and what to delegate, will be discussed.

    4. Navigating Influence & Power
    November 5, 2019

    In whatever role we choose to play in our professional life, we need to influence others’ thinking and behavior. This session will explore sources of power, how power structures impact our work lives, and influencing strategies to support success.

    5. Leading Through Conflict
November 12, 2019

    In this session we will discuss conflict as an inevitable part of our professional lives, and one of the most commonly cited challenges for leaders. We will focus on identifying different types of conflict, encouraging conflict that creates innovation and problem-solving, and minimizing unproductive conflict.

    6. Guiding Organizational Change
    November 19, 2019

    The most important part of any organization is its people. This course will address key topics such as recruitment, retention, development and evaluation of staff, volunteers; the importance of diversity in the nonprofit workforce; and specific strategies to create a motivating and rewarding work environment.

    7. Leading Across Cultures
    November 26, 2019

    This session will focus on the experience of collaborating with others with differing backgrounds, assumptions, and behaviors. Through various exercises and discussion, students will have the opportunity to explore biases, understand cultural differences, and adopt a global mindset.

    8. Coaching Others for Growth
    December 3, 2019

    Research shows that relationship-based learning experiences, such as coaching and mentoring, have the greatest impact on employee development and performance. This session will highlight best practices in coaching and mentoring, with a focus on tools and strategies.


  • Meet the Instructor


    Amy WallisAmy Wallis, Lead Faculty

    Dr. Wallis is a Full Professor of Practice in leadership and ethics in the Wake Forest University School of Business. She is an organizational development leader with experience in organizational strategy, talent and leadership development, and succession planning. Prior to joining the Wake Forest faculty in 2012, she was an organizational development leader in various international corporate environments focusing on organizational change, talent and leadership development, performance management, and succession planning. She has consulted with organizations in many industries, including travel, high tech, pharmaceutical, professional services, banking, and the non-profit sector.

    Program Prerequisites

    Participants must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent. A TOEFL examination for non-native speakers of English is not required but students are expected to read, write and comprehend English at the graduate level to fully participate in and gain from the program.     All classes are held on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Missed sessions will not be refunded.

    Course will be held at the Wake Forest University Charlotte Center in Uptown Charlotte: 200 North College Street, Suite 150 Charlotte, North Carolina 28202

    Parking is available for class after 4PM at no charge in the Wake Forest University Charlotte Center Parking Garage located on 5th Street and adjacent to the Wake Forest Charlotte Center.  (You may enter/exit the garage from 5th or 6th Street.)  Please bring your parking ticket in for validation.

  • Cost


    $3600 one-time registration and payment for all 8 classes. Registration is complete and your place in the class reserved as full payment is received.  Payments are considered nonrefundable on/beyond their designated course registration deadline.

    Participants attending all sessions and successfully completing all required coursework within the course time-frame are eligible to receive a Wake Forest University Certificate.

    There is a 5% discount for the second (or more) bundled courses taken in this 2019-2020 academic year.
